Hiring
The University of Arkansas is an institution committed to ensuring equal opportunity for all applicants and, therefore, requires posting and advertising of vacant faculty and appointed staff positions.
The Process
All recruitment, selection and hiring of faculty and staff is managed in Workday. Applicants apply through the Workday Careers website. Advertising is encouraged but not required for temporary appointments of one year or less, graduate assistants and extra-help hourly positions. Departments should contact their Human Resources Partner to begin the recruitment process.
For assistance with posting waivers (internal promotions, transfers, demotions and external variance requests), refer to the Office of Equal Opportunity and Compliance (OEOC) for instructions.
Background Checks
Background checks will be conducted for all potential hires and incumbent employees who are applicants for new positions. All candidates selected to continue in the hiring process will receive an email from the university's third-party background check company, HireRight.
Unless prior completion of the check is required by law for the position, hiring units may extend a conditional offer of employment. The offer is expressly contingent upon the completion of any and all required background checks, with results deemed fully satisfactory at the sole discretion of the university.
Refer to Fayetteville Policies and Procedures 402.1 for additional information.
Foreign Nationals
A foreign national does not have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency. New employee paperwork for permanent residents is completed within the hiring department. For all foreign nationals, new employee paperwork – including E-Verify and SUNE – must be completed by Human Resources.
HR will complete the W-4, I-9 and direct deposit forms; perform E-Verify processes; enter new employee information in Workday; and provide the NRA with pay simulation and an income estimate.
Nonresident aliens are not required to have a Social Security number (SSN) to begin work. Because the process to receive a SSN can take four to eight weeks and the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires that all workers be paid, HR issues a temporary SSN, valid for 60 days, to NRAs during the initial appointment. When the permanent card arrives, the NRA must present it at HR for copying and return the temporary SSN.
Download the Social Security Application Packet for NRAs.
International Tax Compliance is responsible for analyzing tax implications for payments made to individuals who indicate they are not U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens, ensuring the university is in compliance with nonresident alien tax withholding regulations.
If you have any questions or plan to make a payment to a foreign national, please contact nratax@uark.edu.
Job Sharing
Arkansas law allows job sharing, a form of employment in which two people arrange their work hours in a way that covers a single, regular, full-time salaried position. The combined number of hours worked by the two part-time employees cannot exceed the number of hours a full-time employee would work in the same position (usually 40 hours per week). Both employees must be part-time and both must use the position in the same way. For example, if the position is classified as a secretary, both employees must perform secretarial duties. Hourly positions may also be shared.
