Graduate Student Assistantship Available, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR, 72701
Funding for a graduate student to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR is available beginning fall semester, 2009 to study neuroendocrine mechanisms of stress responses in poultry. Interest and experience in endocrinology, immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization histochemistry and molecular biology are desirable. A background in neurobiology and neuroanatomy would be beneficial. Research in the lab is focused on the neuroendocrine control of stress and reproduction in poultry. We are concentrating on genes and receptors that impact the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis and associated systems, involving reproduction and stress. We also study specialized neurons in the forebrain of chicks that we feel function as encephalic photoreceptors and therefore are responsible for a bird’s response to photoperiod and seasonal events in their annual cycle. We use a combination of behavioral, physiological, anatomical and molecular approaches to investigate plasticity of neuronal systems. Center of Excellence for Poultry Science houses the Confocal Microscopy Core Lab with a Leica TCS SP2 AOBS laser scanning microscope, DNA sequencing lab with the capability of nucleotide sequencing, genotyping and performing real time RT-PCR, and Cell Sorting and Characterization Center with a flow cytometer and a PALM MicroBeam laser capture microdissection system incorporated with a Zeiss Compound Microscope. The center also houses the Statewide Mass Spectrometry Laboratory. The University of Arkansas, due to an extremely successful fund-raising campaign, offers competitive Distinguished Doctoral Fellowships (DDFs) and Doctoral Academy Fellowships (DAFs) that can supplement any assistantship that is offered to a new prospective graduate student (for detail see http://www.uark.edu/depts/gradinfo/recruit/funding/fellowships.html). The fellowships are very competitive and are based upon a student’s GPA, GRE scores and letters of recommendation. Qualified candidates are encouraged to consider these fellowship funding opportunities.
Please send curriculum vitae, transcripts of courses taken, GRE scores, names and contact information for three references and a statement of research interests to Drs. Wayne J. Kuenzel (wkuenzel@uark.edu) or Alexander Jurkevich (ajurkev@uark.edu), Poultry Science Center, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR 72701.
